A preferential duty is a tariff that is lower than the normal tariff rate applied to FTA country imports. It is the lower rate of duty which may be claimed in respect of eligible products from countries with which the importing country has entered into a free trade agreement. It is usually necessary to provide proof of origin in order to claim the preferential tariff rate.
