General Rate Increase

A general rate increase (GRI) is a general increase in the base shipping rate that the carriers may impose over a specified period for all or selected routes. Typically driven by the supply and demand chain in freight shipping, it may vary across various carriers and routes.

The GRI is usually started by larger carriers and U.S. carriers tend to announce a GRI on the first of a calendar month, given that the U.S. law compelled the carriers to pre-announce any GRI with a minimum 30 days advance notice.
