During the era of HPS and HID grow lights, those grow lights with “1000W” power remained the industry standard for “Adequate Cultivation Lighting Power.” Some experienced marihuana growers have maintained allegiance to this informal standard despite the new era having already arrived — the era of retrofitting these less efficient grow lights to LED grow lights.

While these growers may be out of touch, there is one thing they are absolutely right about: In cannabis cultivation, grow results are near-proportional to grow light intensity (before the peak is reached). This is illustrated by the diagram below:

LED grow lights are more efficient than HPS or HID grow lights, as they convert a greater proportion of the electrical energy into lighting, rather than into thermal waste. The Mars Hydro FC-E1000W comes equipped with 10 light bars and is installed with 4,910 pcs of BridgeLux diodes, providing a Photosynthetic Photon Flux (PPF) of 2,766 μmol/S and a color temperature of 3416K with a power consumption of 1,000 Watts. It is capable of operating at AC voltages of 100V to 277V with relative amperages.

Targeted full spectrum lighting for indoor growing

The full spectrum has proven to be the most effective spectra in the world of indoor cultivation, but the percentage of “colors” in the PAR range varies among LED manufacturers.

Rich in red, blue, and green (a spectrum that proves indispensable), the Mars Hydro FC-E1000W LED grow light supports the full cycle of growth, from seed to harvest — not too much red to cause the growth of long and fragile stems at the seedling stage, nor too little red to cause the growth of thin leaves and small buds.

Every spectrum is just right. The blue spectrum plays a role in plant growth, stimulating plant growth with the best efficacy. It encourages stronger seedlings and causes the plant’s leaves to grow wider to capture more light, meaning the plant feeds more and there is an increased accumulation of plant-based phytochemical to produce thicker leaves and greater buds.

In its standard form with optimum performance, the FC-E1000W is a 1.2×1.2m LED light that covers a 4x4ft area and emits an output of up to 2,000 μmol/m²/s of PPFD.

However, as many growers and farms will not need such an intense grow light continuously, Mars Hydro has paired 2 extended support bars and brackets with the FC-E1000W to “transform” it into a 1.7×1.2m LED grow light. This new size covers a 4x6ft grow space but has a slightly lower intensity. 

In this extended form, the output of the FC-E1000W is still strong, consuming 1000W, but is not too intense for private growers and small-room operators. The PPFD in this form (4x6ft coverage) ranges from 1,000 to 1,300 μmol/m²/s. 

This extended form was originally designed for 4×6 or 4×8 grow tents, and mainly for commercial projects with rolling tables / rolling benches / grow trays. Commercial managers could also use the extended FC-E1000W as a 4-ft-wide LED grow light or a 6-ft-wide grow light to fit in many indoor grow room designs.

Additionally, DIY enthusiasts can use the two extended support bars to build side or bottom lighting for the plants. In the end, it’s all about imagination and electrical knowledge, however, it is of paramount importance to always consider safety.

Operators usually leverage the strongest PPFD three weeks before the end of the flowering stage. In this way, the buds are bigger, have more pollen, and a better flavor. Once at the peak, correct light penetration can be a deep downward light, meaning the side branches receive sufficient photons to grow chunky buds.

But not all cultivation can handle a PPFD this high. So, there’s another conventional peak, which is the optimal point for personal indoor growers: 1,000 μmol/m²/s.
